I am licensed to practice law in New York, but not in CA. I spent most of my work life in the financial services field. In 2023, I was very proud to become a Board Member of Wags and Walks, which I consider to be the premier rescue in SoCal.
In 2017, I began working on a project by project basis with Jill Ryther, universally regarded as among the preeminent animal rights lawyers in California. She trained me in the field, from veterinary malpractice to custody cases and so-called "dangerous dog" and "vicious dog" cases with Animal Services. In 2018, I began handling all of these cases for Ryther Law Group.
No longer a sole practitioner firm, Ryther Law Group continues to hire me for litigation support on cases; and virtually all Animal Services cases are contracted to me. I believe I have handled far more Animal Services cases than anyone else in SoCal; and I may be the only person in SoCal to handle them on a regular basis.
The rules in this area do not follow the normal rules of civil law. The culture of Animal Services Departments—who have little to no oversight in how they operate—is very different than the areas of law that civil law attorneys know and understand.
Every case is truly unique; and skillful representation involves the ability to recognize the nuances of your situation and getting out ahead of them. That takes a blend of instinct, experience, knowledge of code sections and of each specific Department's culture.
Much of the work that goes into representing people in cases involving Animal Services happens before a hearing. In fact, sometimes, hearings can be avoided altogether.
The sooner I am able to become involved, the more opportunity there typically is for a positive outcome.
