Sometimes an incident happens and you just want to get out ahead of the possibilities. You're concerned a complaint will be filed with Animal Services and you'll hear from an officer.
What do you do before any contact? What if an officer shows at your door (which is common)? What do you need to know about your rights?
Contact from an AC officer can range from a few questions to a full-on demand that you give over your dog. The officer's method can range from friendly to outright bullying. But make no mistake: AC OFFICERS ARE NOT ON YOUR SIDE. They are there to collect info to be used against you, even if they tell you otherwise (no kidding). DO NOT try

But make no mistake: AC OFFICERS ARE NOT ON YOUR SIDE. They are there to collect info to be used against you, even if they tell you otherwise (no kidding). DO NOT try to be a "good citizen" and just tell them everything, as if they will help you. Instead, think of them as investigators for the prosecution of a case against you.
Take their card. DO NOT let them in your home. DO NOT let them walk around your property. DO NOT let anyone bully you (gently or forcefully). Some officers believe they have more authority than police when it comes to invading your property and your personal rights.
Always be polite; but be firm in not answering questions on the spot. Tell them you or your representative will get back to them soon. Give yourself time to take some breaths, gather your thoughts, and to fully process what has happened before moving on.

Very few people -- including attorneys -- understand what a dog owner will have to face when s/he goes to an Animal Services hearing. The rules aren't fair, Animal Services often is unconcerned with due process, and the hearing officer who runs the hearing and makes the ruling is either another Animal Services employee or hired by the Department. The cards are typically stacked against you from the outset.
Failing to properly prepare for a hearing and being unprepared for the "unpredictability" and inherent biases are often fatal. This can mean, a ruling where your dog can be killed by Animal Services or a ruling that places onerous terms and conditions on you, costing you thousands of dollars.
